CONTINUED MARINA IMPROVEMENTS

Durocher Marine has finished installing 300 feet of new steel sheet pile, cap, and reinforcement which enhances and expands the City of Manistique’s municipal marina.

INSIDE THE PROJECT

Following the Phase 1 project Kokosing completed for the City of Manistique, Phase 2 was bid and awarded to continue the dock wall work on the municipal marina. The project entailed removal of the existing marina bin wall, realignment and front/rear sheet pile installation, and finally with the prime contractor backfilling, grading, concrete placement, utilities, and floating dock/finger pier installation. 

The project was completed in the fall of 2020.  Record high water on Lake Michigan and weather impacted our progress and created challenging conditions. These included extensive dewatering efforts and sealing of the interlocks of the lake ward sheet pile. Complicating the site conditions further was the presence of an existing municipal wastewater siphon RCP line. The line was located on-site and ran under the new sheet pile wall and across the Manistique River to the city treatment plant. This required extensive layout and locating to ensure no damage occurred to the line. 

WHY IT MATTERS

The owner was limited to shutting the municipal marina down for one summer season for use as a dock and fuel waypoint. Any delays to the schedule would cost the city additional lost revenue. Kokosing completed the project on-schedule and on-budget with no injuries. This allowed the prime contractor to complete their work on-schedule to ensure no delays to the owner. This project further strengthened our relationship with the prime contractor, engineer, and the owner for possible future work. 

BEYOND THE PROJECT

As a result of Kokosing’s performance, the engineer of record has contacted us for possible future work in the area and surrounding communities. Also, the owner has a revitalized marina that will service its customers for many decades to come.
