KEY CHALLENGES & PROJECT DETAILS

• Project consisted of emergency slope repair in the Piscataway Hills Community in Fort Washington, MD, at the lower section of Piscataway Drive.
• Heavy rains set off a landslide, causing slope failure in what is considered the costliest natural disaster in Prince George’s County history.
• The slope failure forced residents to evacuate their homes, knocked down trees, broke water and sewer lines, and caused cracks, partial collapse, and ultimate failure of Piscataway Drive, the only road into the neighborhood.
• A total of 28 homes were evacuated of which six were condemned.
• Corman worked with Prince George’s County officials and their designer to finalize the design and then reconstructed the area as follows:
  • Drove H-piles on both sides of the damaged roadway for stability;
  • Flattened and stabilized the slope to keep it from fracturing and sliding;
  • Used Geo-grids to reconstruct a stabilized slope;
  • Reconstructed damaged water and sewer utilities;
  • Installed a new storm drain system;
  • Constructed 1,600 LF of new roadway.
